What is an epidemic? What are the differences between epidemic and pandemic?

 Today in “Read English Essays”, we are analyising outbreak, epidemic, pandemic and COVID-19 topics.

As you might already know everyone is talking about Coronavirus or COVID-19 nowadays. As a natural result of that people all around the world wonder what an outbreak is or what differences are between epidemic and pandemic.

According to World Health Organization, an outbreak is the existence/presence of cases in excess of what could normally be anticipated in a defined geographical area, community or season.

After defining briefly what an outbreak is we can focus on epidemic, pandemic and differences between them. First of all we have to say that epidemic and pandemic are different types of outbreak.

As a term of epidemic is used for defining a very quick spreading of a disease. Epidemic is caused very unusual increasing of disease in a very short time. During the disease time this outbreak could occur in a community, geographical area or several countries(not all countries or all around the world like pandemic!)

On the other hand a pandemic is a kind of an epidemic which effects all country or the entire world.  So as a definition pandemic is related geographical zone. While an epidemic describes fast and effective spreading a disease, a pandemic describes its geographical spreading speed.

A pandemic is more dangerous than an epidemic.

Because when we are talking about a pandemic(like COVID-19) we should know that;

- It is more lethal,
- It is more wide-spread,
- Affects and infects more people and more countries or all around the world.

If we put them in order of danger;

Outbreak  --)  Epidemic --)  Pandemic (Coronavirus - Covid-19)

This is an end to our essay today. We don’t want you to feel bored while you are reading it. (there are a lot of long and boring essays on the internet of course!). We will talk about Coronavirus and Covid-19 in another essay.
